Anthropic’s latest report reveals how people should really use AI
Anthropic’s latest data shows experienced users treat Claude like a collaborator, not a supreme being — and get significantly better results for it.
Anthropic published its fifth Economic Index report today, and buried inside the usage data is something more useful than economics: a clear picture of how people who get real results from AI actually use it.
Most casual users treat AI like an all-knowing entity. They hand it a problem, expect it to figure everything out, and wait for a finished answer. The report shows that new Claude users behave exactly this way — high directive mode, minimal back and forth, full autonomy handed over from the start.
Experienced users do something different.
- They iterate: High-tenure users spend more time refining and adjusting outputs rather than accepting the first response.
- They stay involved: Directive mode drops from 38.1% among new users to 29.4% among experienced ones.
- They use it to learn: High-tenure users are more likely to engage with Claude as a thinking partner rather than an oracle.
- They get better results: Task success rate climbs from 66.7% for new users to 73.1% for experienced ones.
The report notes this could partly reflect survivorship bias. People still using Claude a year in are likely those already getting value from it. But the direction is consistent: more involvement, better outcomes.

The Bottom Line: The data confirms what more experienced AI users already know. You cannot ask AI to think for you and expect great results. On the contrary, handing it a task with minimal input and stepping back usually produces low quality output. The people in this data getting the best results are the ones who stayed in the conversation.
